Mangroves are found in subtropical and tropical areas in both hemispheres. They thrive on coastlines in brackish water and in swampy salt marshes. The heartwood is light red sharply defined from the yellowish, grayish, or pinkish sapwood. The heartwood may deepen to a dark red or reddish brown sometimes purplish, color straight to irregular grain with a fine to medium texture and low luster. May contain pomelle figure. Generally difficult to machine due to high density but straight grain material tends to yield smooth, finished surfaces after machining. Turns and finishes well.
